It was old science, published back in 2011, but the implications intrigued her. Adira wasn’t as interested in eliminating fear as she was in generating it. What if instead of removing a healthy fear (like fear of a predator’s smell), a similar mechanism could be used to implant an unhealthy fear? Better yet, an overwhelming, anxiety-laden, paralytic fear? Could she generate a Betta fish reaction in humans?

Betta Virus A Jadzia Banks Short Story Single eBook Jadzia Banks

Having been involved in the USPS anthrax crisis in 2001, I found this story to be frightening. It was a bit technical, and since I'm not usually a sci-fi reader it put me off a little (that is my own personal preference, not a reflection of the author or story). However, I loved the analysis of the de-socialization of social interactions between family members and friends. Discussing the increase in mental health issues and disorders and our lack of even acknowledging them is scary in and of itself, but the horror that people are out there plotting... designing... and determined to bring about the fall of civilization is scary. We all know they are out there, we dare not think about them.

The story is well written with a good pace. I'm sure it could easily be turned into a novel that would entertain Sci-Fi fans everywhere.

Betta Virus A Jadzia Banks Short Story Single eBook Jadzia Banks Reviews

Very interesting and different. How one person created so much havoc and never realized she had infected herself was the epitome of justice
Betta Virus is a gem of a short story. I was completely satisfied with this artistic and compelling work.
An imaginative and unusual sci fi story with a surprising ironic twist. The scientist has managed to destroy what she was trying to promote.
This is not my usual genre, so when I say that once started, I couldn't put it down, I mean it was good. The author is adept at developing realistic, sympathetic characters quickly. The plot is engaging and makes one take a good look at the way we use technology today. How will our usage look decades from now given the current trends? Could this be us?
Terrific medical sci fi short story! Set in the near future, Adira and Carlos are secular Islamist terrorists bent on destroying Western culture by infecting Westerners with an irrational fear of human interactions. What ensues is a biting commentary on how our own culture has evolved by its own devices.
Though short, this is an exceptionally well written and clever story. The writing is smart and with some subtle and sarcastic play. The characters are well describe and well defined. I can't speak to the science, and without spoiling the story, let's just say terrorists' plans don't always work out as they intend...or do they? If you are interested ina nicely written and constructed short, you might enjoy this one.
There's a great deal to think about in this short story - and not all of it comfortable.
Adira is an Islamic terrorist, working in a secret lab to try to create a way of destroying Western civilisation.
The key to her research is the Betta fish. That's right, that little fish that floats around on its own in a little bowl. You see, Betta fish can be scared to death by seeing another - and that's what Adira seeks to replicate... in humans.
What follows is a mix of intriguing science, disturbing considerations of how to distribute virues - and pointed satire about what happens next.
I didn't always feel at ease reading parts of this story, but it's undeniably thought-provoking. And that earns it a definite thumbs-up.
